Young Leaders

The Young Leaders Award is a practical programme of leadership training for young people between the ages of 10 and 14 that supports them working with younger children through teaching leadership skills across a whole range of games and activities.

The Award responds to the individual needs of young people through a flexible, differentiated programme. It focuses on specific skills such as instruction giving, organisation of people and equipment and the use of space, but rather than breaking leadership down into its constituent parts, the Award teaches these topics through a practical, activity based, holistic approach. In this way young leaders ‘learn by doing’ and by the end of the course not only will they have the confidence and ability to lead others, but will also have knowledge and experience of an extensive range of games and activities.

Benefits of the Young Leaders Award include:

  • Encourages young people to take responsibility and develop leadership skills
  • Developing skills such as organisation, communication, confidence and self esteem along side planning and self review
  • Supports the work of adults within the organisation
  • Provides the opportunity for older children to work with younger children thus promoting integration and social inclusion
  • Reduces problems associated with bullying and inappropriate behaviour
  • Encourages co-operation and helps to develop moral and social skills

Course Content
The course is practical based where participants ‘learn by doing’ and they are encouraged to share their ideas with their peers and then put them into practice. The final session revolves around running short activity based sessions for younger children where the knowledge they have previously learned, and the ideas they have explored, are put into live sessions.

Course Delivery
This 6 hour course can be delivered in a variety of ways to suit the requirements of individual schools. For example, 2 x 3 hour sessions, 3 x 2 hour sessions or 6 x 1 hour sessions. Each participant is required to complete a short workbook which is provided at the first session. This workbook is then kept by the participant as a future reference guide.
