What would America be like if more value was put into education than sports and entertainment?
Greg the traditional Catholic asked:

Now we all know that American culture places way more value into sports and entertainment than education. Just imagine for a moment if that was switched around. What would America be like if more value was placed in education than sports and entertainment.

When you turn on the television, you would see headlines for chess players, spelling B’s in elementary schools, classical ensembles being performed in musical halls, scholarships being granted to the bright, etc. Imagine that all of this was the big hype in America, replacing all the media coverage you normally see about celebrities, movies, rock concerts, and sports. So much value would be placed in education and the bright intellect.

What would America be like if this were the culture of the country?

If you want more value in education. Lets get rid of the Department of Education and return the schools to the states.

In this country the left has taken over education, and it’s become a shitty thing.

A focus on money, not quality, it’s a shitty thing.

A focus on indoctrination, not substance in education, it’s become a shitty thing.

A focus on the political, has made it down right shittical.

Now Barrack Obama, wants to make the same **** last longer.

We’d be like China, only with a better basketball team, and movies that don’t need subtitles.

I’m being very honest. Our country would be so freaking boring as hell. I’m glad it’s not like that thank god!

what. you mean you don’t support pansy arsed athletes who can’t attract enough support from consumers to pay for their ball playin’ and instead have to rely on socialism and public subsidies.

now c’mon. what b the matta with yo’ brain:)

It sounds good to me. Except who’s values are you talking about?

Monetarily speaking, yes more money would be great. However what kind of educational products will be brought into school?

Who will set the standards in the schools? Those who do this currently are failing.

Sports, movies, and rock concerts are what the people want. To put it into a mathematical formula, say consumer desire=x, education=e, and money=m. M-X=E

^^^ And hopefully not poisoning other country’s children…

If the value was put into education then we would not have entertainment or sports because we are a country of extremes. We do not deal in a gray area its all one way or the other.

Education isn’t this country’s problem. Poor moral values are. God bless.

I think, like one of the previous submitters said, get rid of the department of education, but instead of turning the duties over to the states, make all schools private schools. More competition between schools will increase efficiency and productivity as well as the quality of education.

    because nobody cares

and if nobody cares, they aren’t going to spend their money on it.

i’ll never pay $50 for tickets to a spelling bee

It would be a much better society in which to live, this is why the powers that be would never let this happen. Sports and entertainment serve the purpose of distracting the masses from their subjugation at the hands of elitist corporate titans.
In fact, throughout the history of western culture academic advance among the general population has been viewed as a threat to those who rule.

Hollywood values= oral *** and ****** on drugged 13 year olds.Just ask Whoopee Goldberg. You raise a great point,we are in alot of trouble and Morality is the reason why.Idolatry is what the majority of Americans are guilty of.Certainly not being Workaholics or Learnaholics.

Pretty much the same if we keep the social promotion and poor teaching methods. We’d be watching people win spelling B’s even though they can’t spell because the “effort was there”.

To be honest, those with any smarts know that is the America that we had, instead of this crazy mixed up country that we have now. If it continues going down the road to hell, we will be worse than a third world country. Those who sold us out will have spent their day in the sun, and their descendants will reap whats been sown.

Great question, Andy. We would rank higher in the world for innovative scientists, explorers and inventors. If you could only get the media to see this as beneficial.

I don’t really follow… USG doesn’t put a dime into sports – so you must mean the American consumer. The average cost to a consumer per year at a university is like 35,000 a year. That’s obviously much more than any one person spends on football jerseys and movie tickets. So it’s not dollar values you are talking about.

Are you suggesting then that because we find the Olympics more entertaining than a spelling bee that we are somehow flawed culturally?

Step back off this one and consider a more realistic perspective.

You would probably see a more intellectual debate over issues, and a greater understanding of the issues our government faces.

The Republican party over the past three decades has played to lower economic classes that are usually under educated with a folksy type way of speaking. Essentially “dumbing” down their message. People liked Bush because he was a “guy you could have a beer with”. He then quickly proved that a guy you could have a beer with wasn’t smart enough to effectively lead the country. Palin ran the same way in 08 election, and as a result, the Republican strategy is not to come up with a plan, it’s to come up with ideas about why the Democrats shouldn’t.

And as Blagiovich proved in Illinois, there are just as many Democrats that are equally lacking in education.

Would imporoving America’s educational system remove the political divisions? Certainly not, but it would certianly improve the relations between Republicans and Democrats. You would see debates mirror the presidential debates from when FDR was President and you would see Party speaches on the Republican side mirror Rockafeller’s speech against Goldwater rather then the chest thumping that goes on today.
